A song against a bridge (de Wappersong) by Marc

A few minutes ago Stef Kamil was on Radio 1.
(listen to the interview here)

Artists and politicians are raising theire voice with a protest song against the controversial Oosterweel in Antwerp. They want to encourage the Antwerpians to speak against ‘de Lange Wapper’, writes De Morgen.

The Antwerp senator Freya Piryns (Groen!) approached the musicians of Zita Swoon and they came up with the idea of a protest song. Together with Raymond van het Groenewoud they recorded a song to support the movement against the Lange Wapper-bridge (part of the oosterweelverbinding). The song is based on ‘Walk and don’t look back’ by Peter Tosh, a song they also played in the past ‘A band in a box’-tour. The song was chosen because those were also the words of Antwerp mayor Patrick Janssens (sp.a) after growing criticism on the Oosterweel. The lyrics -adapted to the project and situation- were written by Patrick de Witte (humo’s pdw).

The objective is to re-open the discussion and give their alternative a fair chance. (more)

lyrics:
We rijden door en zien niet om (aka ‘de wappersong’)
‘t Sint-Anna bos en het Noordkasteel
Ze zullen verdwijnen, man
(fijn stof, geen groen, fijn stof)
Voor de Wapper, de Lange Wapper
daar komen vodden van
(fijn stof, geen groen, fijn stof)

Refrein
Maar voor de mannen op ‘t Schoon Verdiep
Is dat gezeur en benepen kritiek
We rijden door en zien niet om (..zien niet om) (x2)

D’ economie haalt het iedere keer
Boven ‘t algemeen belang
(fijn stof, geen groen, fijn stof)
Ja, ‘t Stad was wel van A
Maar blijkbaar niet voor lang
(fijn stof, geen groen, fijn stof)

Bridge
‘t Stad naar de haaien
Laat u niet naaien….

…door projectontwikkelaars
of door het stadsbestuur
(fijn stof, geen groen, fijn stof)
ja ‘t Stad was wel van A
Maar blijkbaar voor korte duur…
(fijn stof, geen groen, fijn stof)

Trivia:
They recorded the song yesterday ( june 19 2008 )
Stef was asked by Freya Piryns (groen) to do this.
